Hainan is located in the southern end of China, with north latitude from 03°20'to 20°18' and west longitude from 107°10'to 119°10'. All year around, it is hot like summer, no winter climate with rich rainfall.
The eastern areas are wet climate while the western, dry, which gives a high potential for photosynthesis. Hainan is the main production basis of China for some tropical fruits, anti-season vegetables, latex, betelnut, coffee and etc. It is also an ideal area as breeding basis in the south.
| Climate
Hainan Island has an annual average temperature of 22°c-28°c. Temperature in middle mountainous area of Hainan is relatively low, while it’s higher in the western and southern area. There is no winter in Hannan. January and February are the two coldest period with average temperature 16°C~24°C.Even the lowest temperature is no lower than 5°C. Summer begins from the early half of March till to early half of December. The hottest days are July and August with average temperature 25°C~29°C.
Maccelesfield Bank, Paracel Islands, and Spratly Islands have the monsoon tropical climate with annual average temperature 26.5°C.Most areas of Hannan have rich rainfall and annual rainfall of the whole island is more then 1600mm.
It is very obvious that the humidity between east and west is different. The eastern area is wetter while the western are is drier. Rainfall center is in the middle by east mountainous area with annual rainfall about 2000mm-2400mm. Western area has relative few rainfall with annual 1000mm-1200mm.
Different season has different rainfall. Winter and spring is dry and this period lasts 6 to 7 months from December to next April or May. Summer is rainy and rain season ranges from May to October. The total rainfall during these period reaches 1500mm, consisting 70 to 90 percent of the annual rainfall.
Rain mainly originates from frontal precipitation, thunder rain, typhoon rain and etc.
Humidity is high in Hainan and the annual average water vapor pressure is 23 hectopascal (Qiongzhong) to 26 hectopascal (Sanya). Middle and eastern coastal areas belong to moisture area, southwest is partial desiccation, and others are partial moisture.

Visa and Passport
All visitors to China require a valid passport. The valid period will be 6 month (registering day excluded). Foreign visitors can travel in China during the period allowed by the visa. If the time matures, they can apply to local public security organ and extend their stay in China if needed. After finishing the travel, foreign traveler must fill in the card for exit during the valid period of visa and exit through some special port open to foreigner after checked and sealed by frontier defense organ.
The foreigner can temporarily enter from Haikou or Sanya falling into the following facts: business negotiation, trip or mothering. The precondition is no to stay more than 15 days.
Traffic and Communication
Highroad:
The east freeway (from Haikou to Sanya, passing Qionghai, Wanning, and Lingshui) and west freeway (from Haikou to Sanya, passing Yangpu, Danzhou, Changjiang and Dongfang) are more than 630 km long, and have been run through. Hainan Island has formed a crisscrossing road net with traffic mileage of 17,000 km and high road density 0.61km per square kilometer.
Railway:
The Guangdong-Hainan Raiway is the first crossing-sea railway in China. It links Zhanjiang of Western Guangdong in the north, connecting with the Xihuan Railway of Hannan, and Sanya in the south. This railway has been linked into the national railway chart.
Airline:
Haikou Meilan Airport and Sanya Phoenix Airport has opened over 200 airlines to cities both here and abroad. More than 1000 scheduled flights fly between major cities out and home. Haikou Meilan Airport has been listed as one of the eight large aerial ports of China, and the flight consistency enjoys No.4 in China.
Sea transportation
Haian has opened 24 ports till now, among which 16 ports has deep berth for more than 1,000,000 tons ships. The sea routs can reach middle and low reach of Yangtse River, all coastal ports and other 20 countries and areas including Eastern and Southern Asian countries, African countries and European countries.
Safety
If you travel to where most travelers go, it’s relatively safe. However, cautions should be taken when visiting non-tourist area. Be cautious to petty thefts. Do not leave valuables unattended in hotel rooms; most hotels and banks offer safe deposit boxes for this purpose. Similarly, do not leave valuables unattended while on the beach. A padlock is a useful thing to bring with you as it can be used to secure your luggage while using public transport, and to secure hotel room doors and lockers. A money belt that can be worn under your clothing will ensure that your credit cards, traveler's checks and cash remain hidden and safe. The emergency number for the police is 110.
Currency
The currency used in China is RenMinBi (just RMB for short). The exchange rate: 1 USD equals 8 RMB (according to the exchange rate on 2006/01/13). Because of the Asian financial crisis, the exchange rate is always fluctuating. So it is important for you to check the latest exchange rate before departure. Paper currency has the following par value: 100Yuan, 50Yuan, 20Yuan, 10Yuan, 5Yuan, 2Yuan, 1Yuan, 5Jiao, 2Jiao and 1Jiao. The par value of coin:1Yuan, 5Jiao, 2Jiao and 1Jiao.
